Agricultural & Extension Education

UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES: Curriculum

Agricultural and Extension Education is a program within the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, that offers a BS degree in Agricultural Sciences with concentrations in Teacher Education and Extension Education, and a minor in Agricultural Communications.

The teacher education concentration is offered in collaboration with the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences and it is designed to prepare majors to teach agricultural science in the nation’s public school system. The BS degree with a concentration in teacher education earns the graduate a license to teach agriculture in Tennessee’s public schools.

The extension education concentration is designed to prepare majors for employment in state Extension Services. Specific courses have been identified that will assist the student in becoming an effective non-formal educator with a broad understanding of the various disciplines of agriculture. Completion of the BS degree with a concentration in extension education (with a minimum GPA of 2.7) will meet minimum qualifications for employment in the Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service.

The communications minor is designed to prepare majors to enter the various fields of employment in agricultural communications and public relations. Built upon the teacher education concentration, courses specifically related to teaching [AEE 435 (6), AEE 436 (6), CS 400 (2), ES 401 (2), and SE 402 (2)] are replaced with courses in the College of Communications that allow majors to minor in either Broadcasting, Journalism/Public Relations, or Speech Communications.

An appropriate MS degree is available to continue education beyond the BS degree level for each degree concentration/minor identified above. To learn more about the MS degree program in Agricultural and Extension Education click here.
